Panorama progress

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

I have been working of late on QTVR panoramas as the weather has been uncooperative for aerial photos. The QTVR process is quite entertaining. If you have not taken a look at the QTVR intro page (always handily available under the images link in the header) give it a visit. There you will find an [...]

Today’s trip to Don Ed

Thursday, January 26th, 2006

The marshes seemed to be bulging today though the tide in the bay was very low exposing tires and junk underneath the bridge.

Fresh air

Wednesday, January 25th, 2006

It has been a fabulous week in San Francisco for atmospheric clarity. All week I have been able to lookout of my campus window in Berkeley and discern individual trees on the Marin Peninsula. The clear air was evident on Sunday’s outing too as shown in this image taken of a shorebird from the west [...]

Mirrorball

Wednesday, January 25th, 2006

Just for fun here is a 360 degree mirrorball filter applied to one of the equirectangular panoramas coming out of my QTVR work. The Photoshop plugin is Flaming Pear’s Flexify package.

Heron’s Head critters

Tuesday, January 24th, 2006

I stopped by Heron’s Head Park late Sunday and took a few panoramic photo sets. While there I collected three vials of samples from locations on the edge of the wetlands. The most entertaining sample was from a location just up the shore a bit from where Wayne collected earlier samples.

The sample site shown [...]

Panorama play continues

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006

I have continued to work on the bubble panorama technique and have found a whole world of interesting software and approaches out there. This morning I am trying out Pano2QTVR, an intuitive conversion program by Thomas Rauscher of Austria. Kudos to Thomas.

Bubble Panoramas

Monday, January 16th, 2006

This has been a tough month for field work. I have been to the South Bay repeatedly during the winter term break without much to show in aerial photographs due largely to rain and the lack of wind when it was not raining. I do have a collection of very muddy boots as reminders of [...]

Heron’s Head history

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

A brief history of Heron’s Head Park assembled by the Neighborhood Park’s Council included this interesting segment (attributed to Peter Woodall):

Pumphouse repair underway

Monday, January 9th, 2006

Claudia and I were down at Don Edwards yesterday and came across a crew working on the old Pond N1 pumphouse. This picturesque red building is perched on the west bank of the Newark Slough and has been used as a picnic shelter in more recent times.

Construction in the marsh is a messy proposition.

Herons Head musings

Monday, January 2nd, 2006

I have spent a delightful afternoon poking around for background information about the strip of San Francisco shoreline that now hosts Heron’s Head Park. This has been great fun for in a brief period I have read tales rooted in the India Basin area about the remarkable Long Bridge, imported racehorses, a drastic transformation of [...]
