I did not bother building the kayak, because them ferries would have messed it up good, if the kite was lying in the water.

Or the mysterious blue&white power-boat, which I briefly saw in the darkness, may have taken the kite down, as the kite was practically above the Suomenlinna Naval Academy.

Click on the pic. Then "All sizes". There it is, a flowform with a tube-styled tail. When I was bicycling home, lots of people were staring at the thing. Itwas an amazing sight, as me myself have actually never seen any high-flying kite from faraway before. Because aerial photography was banned only some decades ago, this is not a popular activity in Finland. Some people actually believe they own the airspace above their property.

Loss of the kite is not an issue. Loss of one Pentax W20 is not issue, because I have plenty of those (90 euros from a sale).

The issue is that light airplanes do not follow the correct path to the Malmi airport. They are supposed to make 90 degrees turn 2 kilometers east of this place and enter the 150 meter entry-corridor there.

Another issue is that smaller ferries to Estonia go this way. If the wind dies, the kiteline could cause lots of damage.

The time is now 20:29 and wind getting stronger and turning south. In the morning the kite would be above the Embassies of USA, UK and USSR. Hence there is also potential for international incidence and everlasting fame.

I was kite-flying on island of Uunisaari. But the line slipped from my hands and the kite started drifting east towards Russia. Unfortunately the line snagged onto a crane on island of Särkkä. All boats are on land this time of year, and there was nothing else to do but make the embarrasing call to 112, because of potential danger for aircraft and shipping. --- However the 112-operator was not alarmed or even interested, because the height was not above 300 meters and wind was dying anyway.

 Michael,

I now own 3 deltas which can be used for KAP - a close to 9ft kite by Premier Kites, a 9ft Levitation Light and a Nighthawk since two weeks.

Today I did some KAP at a water reservoir and started off with the Levi Light. After 10 minutes I took it down as the wind was too high for it (close to 5 Bft). It was constantly flying to the left due to the wind surplus. I replaced it with the Nighthawk which had absolutely no problem with the wind. It behaved like it should - no diving, no tricks, just a solid flight with the rig attached to the line. Very comfortable kite for higher winds.

Pierre and Ormes already provided the necessary details, I just tried to give an impression on its usability.

Yesterday turned out to be another perfect fall day here in Wisconsin. Packers win, mid 50's temperatures under sunny skies, and a small window with enough wind to get the Fled in the air. Such a pickle, as most people don't miss the Packer game for anything, and here I was leaving to go fly a kite when the game is about to start. I grabbed my dog, and the new HD Hero and went to a new spot I like to run my dog Max. The roll stabilization unit worked great, but I had been worried due to previous testing at my house, as the tilt had sort a weird bounce in it. That sort of went away when there was more movement due to the kite, as I was originally worried that this camera wasn't going to have enough weight, if you can believe that.

Here is the my version of the roll-stabilization rig using the GS-1 servos and parts from Brooxes.

FYI, The rig wasn't level when taking those pics, as I was too lazy to pull out all the slip-knots. I configured the GoPro HD Hero to use the 720p, 60 frames per second mode, and turned on the "KAV" rig. Outside of a few jitters, it's not nearly as nauseating as other kite videos I've seen or even tried myself. Slowing the video down to half speed without losing any resolution make the HD Hero a cool little camera. I didn't even try to use the intervelometer, as I really wanted to focus on video. I need to do some tweaks to the rig, and get it balanced a little more. However, I'm pretty impressed with the initial results and this will be fun little camera with something cool to capture video.

HD footage of initial flight
I removed the audio, as the sound of the servos goin nuts was annoying.

After a very long pre-order waiting period, my GoPro HD Hero camera arrived today. Now, not specifically for KAP/KAV, it does have some interesting specs.

There is a built in intervelometer which can capture 5mp images at 2, 5, 10, 30 or 60 second intervals. However, the real test for this bad-boy will be HD video. It has a 60 frames per second 720p option, which I am dying to try out on my new roll stabilization rig with the GS-1 servos. Unfortunately, there is no wind in the forecast this weekend. It will also do full 1080p HD video and I ordered a ton of different mounts. It weighs 5.9oz in the waterproof housing. If anyone is interested, I can post pics when I get home later. Hopefully, roll stabilization video testing in the next week or so.

http://www.goprocamera.com/index.php?area=2&productid=33

I slightly different thought: Frankencamera? The in-camera post processing isn't very interesting really -- but open source, scripting, part swapping, possible additional sensors, direct RC link, etc. is more so.

Or steal Ricoh's source code and email it to Ukrainian hackers :)

----------
I just had an SD870 apart. The lens assembly and sensor are basically one unit with two flexible tethers. I was thinking about ways to mount it in different ways (i.e. an array of two-four SD870 lens assemblies with nearly adjacent sensors). However, I think the drivers for focus, zoom, aperture, nd filter, ccd have to be different for different assemblies. Probably little possible swapping of lens assemblies -- even amongst different powershots.

Jim's post about the new Casio camera, and a project at work involving converting a number of Canon DSLRs to IR has got me to thinking:

Canon uses CMOS detectors. Typically these have the amplifier and ADC electronics built into them. So basically they're an addressable digital device. I know Canon's DSLRs and compact cameras all use the DIGIC family of processors. I haven't opened up a Canon PowerShot, but I did get to watch some of the conversion of the DSLRs to infrared.

What are the chances that the detectors on a DSLR and a PowerShot have the same pinouts on their cable?

Here's my "what if" thought: Get something like an A590, disassemble it, and repackage as much as possible into a new box, minus the lens and detector assembly. Plug in a full size or a cropped sensor format detector and see if the camera will read it out. If it will, stick a wide angle lens on it. Voila (plus some hand-waving): a full-frame wide-angle camera that'll run CHDK, designed specifically for KAP.

My guess is this idea would probably die at the first question: I doubt the cables for the two detectors even look remotely the same, much less have the same pinout. But it's a thought. (Ok, so it's Ricoh's thought, but it's a cool thought!)

Tom
